Create a better world

We are on a mission!

One of Bolesian’s goals is to have a significant positive impact on society and the environment in general through its business operations and activities. We are convinced that artificial intelligence has an essential role in forwarding sustainable development. Of course – let’s not be hypocrites – we like to make a few bucks along the way just like any other company. But why not use our AI expertise to make this world a better place at the same time? So we strongly support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Based on shared values and interests we connect and support people and organizations who want to achieve valuable results that last, explore possibilities and lead development. In their decision making, the leadership of Bolesian will also take into account the social, economic, legal or other consequences of the Bolesian’s business operations in relation to (i) the employees, subsidiaries and suppliers (ii) the interests of the company’s customers and its subsidiaries, (iii) the communities and societies in which the company, its subsidiaries and suppliers conduct their business, (iv) the local and global environment and (v) the company’s short and long-term interests.

With our ‘AI 4 Good’ initiatives we focus on:

  • realizing a lasting positive social impact by connecting people, especially in times of crisis or uncertainty.
  • optimizing maintenance of large-scale assets in order to reduce unnecessary investments with public funds and to limit ecological damage.
  • the regreening of vulnerable areas and the stimulation of sustainable agriculture and forestry in order to provide an economic perspective to the inhabitants of those areas.

Here you will find some examples of our ‘AI 4 Good’ initiatives.

TAHMO

The Trans-African Hydro Meteorological Observatory, or TAHMO for short, is expanding the network of meteorological monitoring stations in the African continent. The increasing number of monitoring stations is causing an increase in weather data. Despite this increase, there is no way to view these developments in an insightful way.

Mats van der Burg studies Applied Geo-information Science at HAS University of Applied Sciences. During an internship at Bolesian, Mats got his teeth into a challenging AI4Good assignment: developing an accessible application that shows the monthly precipitation per measuring station on the basis of an interactive map. This will make it possible to show current developments in the field of precipitation in a transparent manner by means of automated data processing. This improves the amount of knowledge available to local African farmers about the weather.

REGREENING AFRICA

W4RA

Bolesian is a partner of W4RA, the Web-alliance for Regreening in Africa. With Bolesian’s expertise in artificial intelligence we contribute to the W4RA’s mission to support farmer-managed regreening activities specifically by enhancing information, communication and knowledge sharing for rural development.

W4RA is an interdisciplinary network collaboration of scientists and professionals in information and computer sciences, informatics, software development, organization, business, and communication. It is hosted as an R&D and education program at the Network Institute of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. Since its inception in 2009, W4RA has been inspired by the African Regreening Initiatives.

PROTECT AND GROW TREES

TREE AID

TREE AID helps people in the drylands of Africa to lift themselves out of poverty and protect their environment. People here live in some of the toughest conditions on earth and trees are essential to their survival. Trees provide nutrition, generate income and help to create a healthy environment. TREE AID helps local African communities to plant and protect trees so they can improve their environment and enable economical growth, for now and for future generations.

For TREE AID student Jan Drabek has developed an AI application to analyze satellite images. Every 8 days satellite images are analyzed to detect deforestation. The app enables analysts to automatically count trees within a polygon area. If anomalies are detected, TREE AID can take action.
